American Sunset RV Park - May 2014

This is the second year we've camped in Westport.  The American Sunset RV Park is the best place by far for location and facilities.  When we arrived this spring the first thing I noticed was how many flowers were in the park.  Each camp space is filled with daisies.  The park attendants mow all the grass and the flowers are back up and blooming the next morning.  So pretty!
The front gardens are well tended.  With gorgeous Iris.
Roses
 Rhodies and purple Hydrangea.
Calla Lilies with raindrops so pretty.
The park added a new spring toy while we were here.
And a new shovel for digging.
The only bad thing I can say, the mosquitoes are outrageous!  Every time I went outside I got bit.  I tried bug repellent and a bug bracelet and the darned bugs were attracted to me.  I'm sure the standing water from the rain had something to do with the swarms of mosquitoes!  We did run into a couple of people we met last year that also winter in Arizona, Yuma.  We plan to get together with them this coming winter in Apache Junction.  This whirly gig reminded me of Desert Holiday, have to say I was a little homesick for the sunshine and friendship.

Pacific Ocean Wonders

This morning we saw this baby seal hugging the Do Not Disturb the Marine Life Sign.
I used my zoom to get a closer look.  I'm sure this baby's Momma was watching from the surf.
Tsunami debris was on the beach.  This is a giant milk crate with Japanese writing on it.  Look at those mussels - I wonder if they came from Japan.
The waves were crashing onto the beach.  The wind was howling but it wasn't too cold. We had some trouble finding clam holes to begin with.
It didn't take long to get our limits.  This is a picture of my favorite clam accessories - clam gun, clam net that hooks on your belt loop and waterproof gloves.  Not pictured is the plastic pouch on an orange lanyard that holds my clam license.  Priceless!
Cool sign Welcoming you to Westport.
I would love to stay in a lighthouse someday, but if I can't.......
This house will be my second choice.  Ultimate beach house decorated with style.

Beautiful Blue Monday!

After two days of gray clouds and heavy rain last night, we woke up to a beautiful blue morning.  Everything looked blue on the beach.
The clams were extra large again and easy to find.
This is the tower at Westhaven Beach near Westport.  We visited this park for the first time today.
Someone built a fort out of driftwood.  Across the bay is Ocean Shores.
Bruce found a nice place to sit and relax while I looked for treasures on the beach.
This piece of driftwood would look right at home in somebodies yard.
Photo op - the pants on the pole were supposed to be a flag for the driftwood fort.
Beautiful driftwood set at all the right angles for picture taking.

Westport camping, Grayland clam digging May 2014

We headed over the pass to the Pacific Ocean this week, stopping for lunch along the way.
Mount Rainier was out in all her glory.  I do love this mountain the best!
The first morning of clam digging saw us on the beach at 6am.  We drove to our favorite clam bed and started searching for clam holes.  The clams were showing!
The clams were easy digging and very nice.
Olivia was at home sick today so I told her I would take a sunrise picture for her.  This is "Olivia's Sunrise".  I've never seen the sun actually look like a star before!
30 clams!

After clamming we headed into Westport to set the crab pot.  This seagull promised to watch the pot for us.
Sights around the harbor - fishing boat off-loading the catch.
New cat feeder huts along the jetty.
Tons of sea lions have made Westport their summer home.

The tourist love it but the fishermen do not.

The Maritime Museum across the harbor.
Beautiful boat.
Beautiful boat that needs some work.  The moss was growing all over it.  So sad.
We watched a sea lion play with a salmon in the harbor.
The sea lion would toss the fish in the air and swim quickly and catch it.  I couldn't really get a good picture but you get the idea from these snaps.  Sea Lions move very quickly in the water!
John and Pat were also camping with us.  They were taking their new fifth wheel on a shake down cruise getting it ready for next winters trip.  Bruce set the crab pots 3 times without success.  The first time the bait door was open and the cage was empty, the second time the bait was eaten down to the skeleton and nothing in the cage and the third time the cage was empty so we gave it up for now.
John spotted this spooky picture - Looks like a skeleton coming up from Davy Jones locker.  It is actually a dead crab stuck on sea weed.
More clams - I think the 10 day tide might just load our freezer for the year!
I love clams!
Mussels and clam taco?
Trying to get a picture of the great barnacled covered tree.

Cheese - notice I'm wearing the same shirt day after day?  It's my lucky clam digging shirt, I do wash it occasionally and my lucky hasn't changed.
Little red on the beach.
Bill and Connie drove down for the day to visit.  We stopped for a group shot before looking around Westport.
Lunch was at Bennett's Fish Shack.  Best fish taco and crab cakes we've ever had.
Climbing the tower to look over the harbor.
Town of Westport.  I think there are more boats than shops finally!
Looking down from the tower.
US Army ship.  I learned something new, the Army has a bunch of ships!
Bald Eagle waiting for a hand-out.
This ship soon provided the hand-out to all the birds by throwing the fish guts and heads into the bay.
Beautiful sailors memorial.  A lady was painting the memorial the day before so it is perfectly white.
More sea lion pictures.
Bill and Bruce
We stopped at a garage sale in town.  Bruce bought this box of junk.  I was excited about the Fiskars scissors, Scotch tape and notepad.  Bruce was happy that he found a key to unlock one of the padlocks in the box.  The snake bite kit was a chuckle and the farm wagon and little car washed up nicely.  We enjoyed about an hour sorting through the stuff.  Reminded me of buying a grab bag when I was a kid.
The shore birds are nesting.
Clamming on Saturday.
The sand was a little strange looking.  These folks look like they are digging in a potato patch.
There was a dead dolphin on the beach.  We stopped for a picture just as these people (I don't know who they are) picked up the dead animal and started posing.  Pretty Gross.
Jason Dodge brought his parents Jann and Elmer, daughters Natalie and Courtney and niece Lizzy down for the weekend.  They arrived just in time for dinner.  Lucky for us we had a roast Marc had given us in the electric frying pan.  It was a little cold but we had a great time.  I even made brownies in the cast iron skillet.  They were a hit as well as the tatters, carrots and gravy!   Thanks Marc and Tracie for the roast!
After dinner we showed the Dodge's the sea lions.
The girls were pretty amazed at the animals sizes.
Sunday morning we met up with the Dodge family and dug our clams.

Jann dug her own limit - I'm pretty impressed!

Today is Elmer's 77th birthday.  What a way to start a new year!
Natalie and Courtney spelled out Happy Birthday Grandpa in the sand.
The girls posed with their grandpa.
Jann's birthday is in a couple of days so she got in the picture too.
Jason was so nice to bring his family down to the beach.  What a good guy!
Jason and Elmer
The hunting partners.  Clam hunting that is!
After we got back to camp I fixed this scrumptious casserole.  It was perfect for brunch and super easy to make.  Two more clam tides and we'll be set.
